Below you will find a list of our volunteer departments that are absolutely critical for the event to happen. Participation drives our culture, and involving ourselves directly is the most radical form of civic duty.
Interfuse Kitchen Volunteers 2023
The Infrastructure Kitchen responsibility is to prepare meals for the ON-duty volunteer staff at InterFuse. We roll up our sleeves and make the food prep and serving happen. It’s fun and you might learn a recipe or two helping out. The best part about it is the volunteers come to you with their stories and share them all while sitting down to a good meal.

Interfuse Earth Guardians 2023
Earth Guardians help us respect the at InterFuse through education on Leave No Trace (LNT) camping and opportunities for practical action. Roaming volunteers walk the public grounds of Interfuse looking for MOOP (matter out of place). You will be armed with a short grabby stick and a small trash bag. Feel free to educate those you meet along the way! Public areas only, theme camps and private camps are responsible for their own MOOP control. HQ volunteers hang out in the shade at EG HQ educating those who wander in on LNT camping. As well as assisting volunteers in checking in to their roaming shifts, facilitating Lost and Found, and maintaining the giving tree. (This position is excellent for people with limited mobility.)

2023 Earth Guardians Lead: Northstar
Interfuse Gate Volunteers 2023
Gate Registration Volunteers create the first experience at InterFuse. This is a wonderful way to plug-in if you are new to the community and a good way meet tons of new friends! Volunteers will receive training and a short list of procedures from a lead before InterFuse and at the event. A radio will be located at the Registration & the Greeters’ Station to stay in touch with the Gate leads.

Interfuse Greeters 2023
What is being a Greeter? Not only do you welcome all the burners home with hugs, spankings, shots, and body stampings, you also get to make sure these people know what they are getting into, how to behave, and how to take care of themselves and/or others. We touch on the Ten Principles, but we also strongly emphasize whatever we determine needs to be focused on for that burn: consent, use of money, heat exhaustion/hypothermia/dehydration prevention, any problem areas that we’ve seen in previous burns, and ultimately, what it really is to be a burner. And all in under two minutes! So if you enjoy popping cherries, giving good hugs, and setting the tone for everyone’s burn, this is the place for you.

Interfuse Medic volunteers 2023
Do you love helping others? Do you have basic first aid and CPR certification? If you meet those two requirements we would love to have you at the medic tent! Medic shifts will be 4 hours each, you will either be at the medic tent or out and about with a small backpack stocked with basic first aid needs. If you’ve volunteered as a medic before we welcome you back. If you’re new I will be reaching out to you to answer any questions. Some of the basic first aid we will provide at the medic tent include small wound cleansing and bandaging, providing salves for burns, ace wraps, electrolyte powder for those who are extremely dehydrated and support for any major medical problems. If at any time you feel concerned a medic lead or co-lead will always be available for you to ask questions!

Interfuse Rangers 2023
- InterRangers are participants empowered by the community and the MWB leadership to serve as first responders, information conduits, and non-violent mediators. InterRangers work with all participants, as well as emergency services, to solve public safety challenges at MWB events.
- InterRangers encourage a community of shared responsibility & only assist the community when needed to help our fellow participants find solutions. The InterRangers’ primary concern is the safety of people, not property we require you work your shift sober.
- There is also The Heartland Safety Third training put on by Midwest Burners that will be held in April. It’s free and an excellent opportunity to engage with members of the community while learning about first aid, de-escalation, and how the different parts of our safety team work together.
- The Lead Ranger on duty will meet with volunteers when they sign in for their shift to orient them to radio procedures, safety, and Ranger philosophy. If they are inexperienced they will be paired with a veteran for their first couple of shifts.
Parking Seguridad 2023
Arrival – This job is super easy and low stress.
Upon arriving, vehicles will be time-stamped and directed to return to park their vehicles after unloading at their campsite. Unless car camping, the window to return and park their vehicle is two hours. Car camping must be approved prior to arriving on site.
- Arriving shifts are suitable for those with limited mobility. If needed, a chair and megaphone will be provided.
Roaming – Roam the entire burn premises to ensure vehicles are returned to the parking lot within their allotted two hour window. Be kind but firm.
- Roaming shifts are suitable for those that like to walk (a lot) or those who like to bike. Bike not included.
2023 Parking Lead: Uno
Interfuse DPW 2023
DPW takes care of all major infrastructure setup and tear down, helps with effigy preparation, and tackles any unexpected chaos the Missouri weather throws at us.
Quartermaster shifts are a seated position and are ideal for folks with limited mobility.
If another dept. is short of volunteers, or no shows we fill that role for them. This includes all but Medics, Sanctuary, and Rangers. WE make sure no ball is dropped. Get ready to shine like a rock star, you’re DPW!
2023 DPW Leads: Lance Scott and Emily Webb
Interfuse Effigy perimeter 2023
Once the effigy perimeter has been closed before the effigy burn, it is important for us to make sure nobody other than members of the F.A.S.T. team cross the perimeter into the effigy field. This is for the safety of everyone involved as they have usually begun loading fuel into the effigy at that point. This is why we need volunteers to stand guard at the perimeter and make sure only the proper people cross into the effigy field. For the 4-9pm shifts it is okay to bring a chair (and a friend) to sit and monitor the perimeter. You will watch the perimeter and make sure anyone that crosses into the field has the appropriate identification to be allowed into the area. Anyone other than that you will ask them to leave the field and please stay safely on the outer area of the perimeter. The shift that begins at 9pm will be standing perimeter for the effigy burn itself and will be free to go as soon as the perimeter is released by the F.A.S.T. team after the effigy falls (regardless of what time that is, you will still get the 3 hours of volunteer time accounted for). That shift will require individuals to stand for the duration of the shift. Come join me in helping make sure we have a safe burn!
2023 Lead: Hummingbird Co-lead: Nectar
Interfuse Sand Team 2023
The sand team get a rare opportunity to stand in the inner circle of the effigy field during the effigy burn. They serve as the last line of protection for the community in making sure everyone stays safe during the burn. This job requires you to be able to stand guard for the entirety of your shift (you will be free to go when the F.A.S.T. team releases the perimeter and will still get 3 full hours of volunteer credit if perimeter is released before 3 hours) and you will be required to be completely sober. Sand team will stand with their back to the effigy, so you need to be okay with not being able to watch the effigy burn. You will need to wear cotton clothing with long pants and long sleeves to shield you from the heat coming off of the effigy. This position truly is a great opportunity, and you will be provided with the appropriate training on-site
Interfuse Sound Marshals 2023
Sound marshals help keep the peace with the neighbors as we rock the campground. You’ll work with ECs and Rangers as needed, but mostly with sound camps and camp leads to keep sound running smoothly. Sound Marshals do regular checks of sound levels from large sound system sources. A good fit for those with sound skills and sound knowledge, and those apt for aural problem solving.

Interfuse Sanctuary 2023
Sanctuary is a place where we provide a safe, sanitary, and comforting environment to Midwest Burners event participants and staff in need of emotional, mental, or spiritual assistance. We use compassionate and respectful peer support to help our fellow burners transform challenging and potentially traumatic situations into a positive experience.
As a special arm of the InterRangers, we work in collaboration with the wider InterRanger team and Medical volunteers to be an outstanding example of a community of participants who support and care for each other.
2023 Sanctuary Lead: Bradley Gilbert
Interfuse City Watch 2023
City Watch strives to help keep our community safer on burn night. We do this by staying behind the scenes and keeping a lookout in the neighborhood while everyone is enjoying the burn. We work closely with the medics, sanctuary and rangers should the need arise.
