HullabalU 2019 Afterburn Report

HullabalU 2019 was held October 11-October 13 in its home location on Jemerson Creek Road in Hartsburg, Missouri. A total of 370 tickets were sold, with a total revenue of 10355.00. The theme for the year was “Questionable Wolf”, continuing the “fairy tale” theme of the burn. Weather was an extreme challenge this year, as we endured an unprecedented amount of rainfall leading up to the event. The land was so saturated that we were unable to drive even golf carts on the property until Saturday, and porta potties had to be placed around the burn individually by ATV, with the majority of them left at the pole barn. Participants had the challenge of transporting their camps by wagons available on site from the parking field. A circus tent provided shelter for Gate/Greeters, and was also the location of a 24 hour coffee station and lost and found, and other community gatherings. Medics and Rangers utilized the covered stage.

Effigy

This year’s effigy was a howling wolf, designed by Drew Perry and built with the help of his crew. It was perfectly placed for the full moon we were gifted, and burned beautifully. Floodlights were placed around the base for illumination at night. It was constructed including natural materials foraged on-site.

Art Grants

Jill Wendling was the Art Grant lead. 1535.00 was awarded in grants, including the coffee cafe and a 2 burner propane stove used for community enrichment. We even had a post office!

Infrastructure

Land prep was started very early this year, in between bouts of rainy weather, and poison ivy was controlled as much as possible. Community members came out for work weekends, and the property looked well manicured. Families had plenty of raked and mowed space to enjoy, keeping the ticks at bay in the main camping areas. Due to the weather, the Board President released contingency funds to purchase additional straw to protect the land. Any areas that were damaged were re-seeded after the event.
