If you have Burning Man advice or tips or resources SPECIFIC to Midwesterners, please let us know and we'll consider adding it to this page. Keep in mind that we're not trying to duplicate the information on Burning Man's website.

  • Burning Man - The official event website.
  • The Burning Man 2010 Art Theme is METROPOLIS: THE LIFE OF CITIES.
  • The Midwest Burners Yahoo Group - This is the heart of the Midwest Burners community. On the Yahoo Group we make camping and trip plans, discuss the proper use of dry ice in a food chest, plan driving routes, ponder the playa, and participate in a hundred other simultaneous conversations.

Being prepared mentally and physically is critical to your survival on the desert at Burning Man. Don't take this trip lightly. Here are some important links concerning preparation:

Burning Man does not advertise at all - its huge attendance is due entirely to word of mouth. So its only natural that the Internet plays a key roll in keeping Burners connected all year 'round.

The Midwest Burners group is made up of people from many different states. We use our Yahoo Group to discuss everything from gas powered margarita blenders to dome fashions. The Yahoo Group is the glue that keeps us together when we are seperated by many miles. It's free to join and there are hundreds of discussions (threads) in progress. Introduce yourself! The Midwest Burners Yahoo Group is a good way to keep in touch with other midwestern Burners before (and after) making the trip to Burning Man.

You can find other, similar Burning Man groups in Arizona, Austin, Colorado, Illinois, Saint Louis, and Utah.

Midwest Burners Neighborhood!

A dusty invitation from Zay:

“I always thought it would be cool for burner friends to all live on the same block in the default world. We live our dreams at BM anyway, so in keeping with the Metropolis theme this year, let's camp near each other and create a neighborhood! This is not an organized camp or shared infrastructure, this is just camping next to friends from back home.

“If you're interested, all you have to do is tune into 89.9 Radio Electra when you get close to the playa or stop by the radio station at 7:40 and Esplanade to find the location of the neighborhood. I'll probably also post the coordinates at Playa Info. Once you find us, show up and set up camp! You're responsible for all of your supplies, shade, and trash, just like if you didn't know your neighbors. Large organized camps are welcome too.

“The neighborhood will most likely be out in the suburbs in order to find a block available. So, you'll have to travel a bit to get to anything in the city. But there should be room for all.

“Also, Thursday night I'd like to have a cocktail block party to meet up with all the midwest folks NOT camping in the neighborhood. I'm bringing a wagon and we'll probably take it on the road to hit up several of our friends' camps. Suggestions for stops are welcome! If you want to participate, bring a bottle of vodka and a big bottle of cranberry juice. We'll mix it and dispense it all from an an aquatainer in the wagon. I'm looking for someone to bring a boombox for the cocktail party and for someone who is coming on Monday, to make a sign for the neighborhood (plywood, zipties, and rebar). Please contact me, zay@midwestburners.com, if you can bring these items or for questions.”

Burning Man Regional Contact for Kansas/Kansas City

Burning Man is a 45,000+ person city, chock full of distractions, schedules, appointments, and a general sense of time become alien concepts after a couple days in the desert. So, finding friends out there can be a major headache, not to mention the folks you've only met on the Internet. This problem is especially hard for Midwesterners, who tend to be spread out over many different camps.

You can check our Midwest Burners Going To Burning Man In 2008 database to see who is going, how they intend to get there, and where they will be camping. A Yahoo Groups login may be required.

Ron’s Burning Man Road-Trip Tips

Ron is a veteran road tripper who has driven to Burning Man multiple times. He advises:

"The fastest way from Kansas City to Black Rock City is actually to go North out of KC on I-29 to Highway 2 in Iowa. The exit is for Nebraska city. Then go West on 2 to Lincoln. Pick up I-80 at Lincoln and the rest is obvious. The little jaunt to the North seems odd unless you look real close at the map. It is an hour less driving than going West on I-70 to Denver then North to Cheyenne (63 miles shorter). An hour isn't much on a 24 hour drive, and you might rather drive the mountains on I-25... Either way you have to cross the prairie, Kansas or Nebraska."

Check this page often as midwest playa events and meet-ups will be added as we hear about them. If you are planning a playa event to bring midwesterners together, please let us know to add it to this page.

Then we'll come invade your camp!
